Rockwood Terrace Rally, September 14, 2016

Video and Media Statement from the Rally in support of Rockwood Terrace held
prior to the County of Grey Social Services meeting of September 14, 2016.

Media Statement  -   Sept 14, 2016
Issued by: Committee to Keep Long Term Care Beds in Durham

T

Today’s Rally provided a strong and clear confirmation to Grey County and West Grey politicians that Rockwood Terrace and its 100 Long Term Care beds, is considered by the public and local businesses as an essential pillar of West Grey and this regional area of Grey County.

The Rally included 300+ area residents, scores of supporting businesses  expressing their collective call for genuine reassurance that the current process to redevelop Long Term Care in this part of Grey County will keep the existing beds here.

Long Term Care beds remaining in West Grey provides:
  1. Ability for current and future residents of the Nursing Home to remain in their life long home community and accessible to their families and friends.
  2. An economic pillar in the area that provides numerous essential living wage jobs and other economic spin offs,
  3. A specific reason why many new retirees move into the area.  Some to be close to their relative being placed within Rockwood Terrace.  Others knowing that they can finish out all of their retirement years locally.
  4. A nursing home that helps attract new doctors and keep existing doctors because of the ability that they can continue to give local care for their elderly or more complex needs patients.
  5. A base of activity for the Durham hospital that helps maintain its viability as further financial pressures are placed on our provincial health care system.
  6. Facilities, resources, people and energy that provide a more complete, vibrant and healthy community.

The Save Rockwood Terrace community group represents residents and families, service clubs, seniors groups, as well as business and professional people concerned about the possible loss of the current 100 long term beds in Durham.

Disappearing Snow!

I placed my Dlink 930L camera in my front window on March 1/14 to record the changes as the snow melted and the summer came.  I don't think we have ever had this much snow piled in front of the house.  It's amazing the changes that a few months make.

T.V. on the Blink!!

I have a Samsung LN46C750 TV which I purchased in 2010.  It gave me a few problems when it was still under warranty, but since then it has worked great.  Over the last few months, it started acting up a bit.  Occasionally, the picture would start to flicker or you might say had a strobe effect.  It flickered when I switched it to my Apple TV at first.   I thought the cause was either the Apple TV or the Internet connection.  As time went on it began doing it with the DVD player and regular TV.
Living where I do, and not having a repair facility close by, a malfunctioning TV kind of disappoints a person.  With that, I decided to search the internet to see if anyone else had the same problem. My search brought me to avsforum.com where I found others with the same problem.  Mind you, they didn't have exactly the same TV model number, but they were Samsung.

It turns out, according to the information on the blog, this is a common problem and can be fixed by simply cutting a jumper wire on one of the boards.  Apparently Samsung issued a service bulletin regarding the problem and a description of how to go about fixing it is on the avs forum.
I am no TV tech, but thought I would give it a try.  When you take the back off the TV, there are only two boards.  One is the power supply and the other has all the connectors on it.  The fix was so simple, that I was really thinking that it was a hoax and I'd be taking the TV to the repair shop regardless.  Here is what I did:
1 - removed stand and laid TV on a blanket
2 - took out  the screws and removed the back
3 - checked the part number on the power supply as per info on avs forum.  (see photo)  It looks like there are a variety of model numbers with the same problem.

4 - located and cut jumper JP852

I took my time - I had the back off the TV,  the jumper snipped,  everything put back together and powered up within a half hour.  Here is a video of what I did.

As for now, the TV is working as it should.  Thanks to those on the avs forum and to the Tampatec guys on YouTube.

Tribute to Allen Hilgendorf

First Mural at corner of Garafraxa and Lambton St.

Allen Hilgendorf
The man who created the murals in the Town of Durham passed away recently.  Allen Hilgendorf painted his first mural at the corner of Garafraxa and Lambton Street.   I remember Allen as a kind soft spoken person with tremendous artistic talent.  He gained my confidence and trust in a very short period of time, and subsequently amazed onlookers with every stroke of his paint brush.   His work did wonders to brighten up our town, and gave travellers a reason to stop and look around or take a photo.
Allen Hilgendorf painted five murals in Durham,  but in all has created over 100 works of art on buildings and large inside walls throughout Grey- Bruce.  We are fortunate to have his legacy live on here in the Town of Durham - Thank you Allen.

Where were you when the lights came on?

Bridge Lighting 2012

The Christmas lights were officially lit at the walking bridge and around the Gazebo in Durham (Wednesday Dec. 5/12) tonight.  The master of the ceremonies for the event was Vi Wilson and the King's Kids, lead by Debbie Tucker sang Christmas Carols.  Vi Wilson also lead the general public in attendance in the singing of some Carols.  Bill McMeekin played the bag pipes as the lights were switched on, then lead the crowd across the bridge to the Durham Art Gallery.
This year's decorations include a new addition, that being a star atop the tree between the Gazebo and the Bridge.  As always, the whole area looks terrific and sets the tone for a wonderful Christmas season.  Hot chocolate was available at the Town Hall for young and not so young alike.  It was a beautiful evening and I congratulate the organizers on a great community event.

Santa Comes to Durham

Saturday December 1, 2012 was the big day for Santa Claus to make his annual pre-christmas visit to Durham.  A great crowd lined the main street for the Parade.  Participation was terrific as the procession of floats, horses, and various other entrants took in excess of half and hour to make its way up the main street.
Chief Berger was on hand to direct traffic prior to the parade.

Audrey and Elanor cooked up some gourmet hot dogs to raise funds for the food bank.

Remembrance Day Parade

Durham Legion Branch 308 marched to the Cenotaph for the Remembrance Day service on Sunday November 11, 2012.  There was a large crowd on hand to honour those who fought for our freedom in the past, and for those who continue to serve our country so diligently.
